SoulSpun Sessions DJ Competition
The Herbal Mafia are holding a DJ competition this Friday - the prize is a residency at the SoulSpun Sessions. Each DJ has just 30 minutes to show off their skills and make an impact on the crowd and the judges. The standards should be high and the styles varied, with DJs playing hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks, house, reggae, dancehall and dnb all confirmed. The competition kicks off at 2200 and runs until 0100, with the winner announced at 0200. Drinks offers and even free food (while it lasts). If you're a DJ and think you've got what it takes, email soulspun@gmail.com.

Switch Live
The next Switch will be a departure from their usual formula, with a night composed entirely of live dance music. Bringing you a line up of live acts from Yorkshire and beyond, they will take you on an eclectic musical journey through breaks, hard dance, techno, drum & bass and more.
Grinny Grandad deliver some of their increasingly popular funky breaks sets. Switch resident Seamless brings some techno to the party. Acoustic Terrorism and PlasmaStorm drop some psy/hard dance with some serious electronica-guitar madness. Kewbik plays out a mixture of breaks and hard dance. Suburban Acid Saturation dish out some acid techno with drum machines and live synths. Womagrid rounds off the night with a set of hard, hectic (and of course live) drum and bass.

Vocalist Wanted
Gazzman (promoter of the Widescreen and Region 2 nights in York) is looking for a vocalist (and possibly other members) for his new group. Building on his DJing experience, he has successfully added live laptop sets and original loops and percussion from a Moog Synthesiser into the mix, and wants to take things further by building up a full live experience. If you're interested, visit www.myspace.com/widescreenmusic for more details.
Sellaband
Sellaband is a new site with a new take on music promotion. Bands sign up and put their music online, fans find songs they like and invest in the band. Once a band has raised $50,000 from 'believers', they head to the studio and record an album professionally. Songs are given away for free through the Sellaband site and sold on CD. Profits from the CDs are split between the band and believers. The aim is to combine the best bits of traditional and new music production: real contact with fans and viral marketing, but with a professional end product too. Though it's a new and untried model, it makes a refreshing change from the traditional music industry. www.sellaband.com
